Hot Rods, Rock 'n' Roll, Radio and Girls......

Back in 1958, at about 14 years old(likely probably younger), I quickly realized that girls and rock 'n' roll were synonymous with hot rods and jalopies.
Even though I couldn't drive until I was 16, my parents did buy me my first car when I was 15 and had to wait a whole year to drive(that was torture). I remember sitting in it and listening to all the great tunes that you see here in these brochures. Kresge's(forerunner of K-Mart) put this little
sheet out each month, so you would know what 45's to buy. I found this one dated September 1958 and the CKY Winnipeg one dated July 1961 in my collection. The CKY one shows the hits from the country & western charts plus the pops charts. Are you too old?......or are you too young to remember? We listened to these songs on CKPR,

and CFPA radio here in the twin cities of Fort William and Port Arthur(now Thunder Bay), and sometimes at night you could get American stations from Milwaukee or Chicago.

Sorry about the tape marks and stains, but they are about 60 years old. Click on each to enlarge and read.

The Great Old A & W drive-in

Here's a wonderful shot of one of the original A & W drive-ins here in Thunder Bay(very close to where I live). It was on the corner of James St. and Arthur St. exactly where the Metro(A & P) grocery store is now. The house and garage across the street in this picture is exactly the same today. The photo was taken in 1980. The music students from the high-schools around the area got together for a 50's tribute which was recorded and televised on cable 7 back then, and done right here at this famous drive-in before it closed. The cars are from left to right, Jerry McKenzie's green model "A" coupe, Art Lee's yellow '33 Ford coupe(which now belongs to Rick Stokaluk...seen in a prior picture), My red and black Hudson Terraplane, Gord Wall's black model "A" sedan, and in the front Dinger Bell's T-bucket. You can see the camera man on the left side of the picture, and all the students having a great time....what a great day!!

Jake and Elwood

Here's a cool photo of Ron Clark and myself taken at a halloween bash where The Sensational Hot Rods were playing a few years ago. We were doing the blues brothers Jake and Elwood, and we actually got up on stage and sang "Ghost Riders in the Sky".

The Sensational Hot Rods

Here's a bunch of super guys I admire, especially the one in the middle. This is a photo of The Sensational Hot Rods, and Steve's dad Ron Clark. The Sensational Hot Rods are the best 50's tribute and rock 'n' roll band you will ever listen to. You can buy their CD's and view their website at http://thesensationalhotrods.com. Ron is an incredible guy who has inspired me in so many ways and mainly by the way he handles his life's difficulties, and I consider him a great friend. Left to right a circle around Ron are: Ron's son Steve(Eljer Hot Rod), Rob(Buffer Hot Rod), Mo(Mo Man Hot Rod), Waylon(Wailin' Hot Rod) and Al(Al Baby Hot Rod). Ron in the middle Is Big Daddy Hot Rod. I had the privilege of working with these guys as co-manager with Ron for the first three and a half years they were doing their great music. Next year 2010 will be their 10th anniversary doing what we all love...50's Rock 'n' Roll music, like no one else!
