Summer of 1958

Here's a picture of my old friend Joey Cooper on the right and myself on the left taken in the summer of 1958. Joe was always my driver in those days. This picture was taken behind where we lived on Arthur St. in Fort William(now Thunder Bay). Joe has been a auto mechanic all his working life and has built a cool early 50's Chevy, which I don't have a photo of yet. I'm working on that! Anything from birth with 4 wheels was cool.

You must have lived between Franklin and Selkirk just east(down the street)from the house with the "monkey" tree and across from the side of St. Joe's boarding School. I think about 3 or 4 doors from west of Franklin Street John K

Yup...I lived right in the middle of the block between Franklin and Selkirk. The Shield's had a monkey about 5 houses west of us and there were monkeys at the greenhouse which was across Arthur St from Vickers park too. I also took music lessons at the Boarding School from the Nuns as well.

In the Middle 1950's my mom would have to put me in a harness and tie me to the neighbors fence as I had been taken to see the monkey in the green house once and I would untie myself and head back to the green house but my older brothers Bob or Terry would chase me and step on the trailing rope to bring me down around the corner of Rankin as I headed down Selkirk (I had made it across the street and 3 house down). Use to go see the monkeys and climb the tree in there back yard all the time,You have a sister Daryl I went to the old wooden St. Mary's with. My great grandma lived in the old folks home at Victoria & Selkirk in front of the school and a recess my younger brother Tim and I would visit her until the nuns found out. Those were the days,no worries just fun. All yes's and great memories...wish I had more pictures of those days. Went to the wooden school too. The old folks home and the school were built during the war years for army hospitals to treat guys coming home with war injuries. I think I know your family by all the hints. I remember a huge Dodge or Playmouth Airport Limo to haul all the kids around in...Does that ring a bell?

Is it the 9 passenger blue 1941 plymouth or crysler think it was a plymouth,we also had a 1951 black dodge also 9 passanger it was full with us.My dad would put my gandfather(his dad) in the back by wheeling him in the chair with the "jump" seats up.Did you perhaps remember seeing the 41 Plymouth (flat head 8 racing engine built by Dick Schutte) screaming out of the back lane of Rankin & Victoria across Selkirk behind the old school across Franklin St(Freddy confectionary) going east or back west on the lane way. My brothers Bob & Terry would take it out on a Sunday when Mom & Dad were not around until a cop caught them after they abandoned it(they saw the cop) and the cop burnt his hand on the (hood to see how long it had been driven),waited them sitting on the big front bumper for them to return telling them if he saw the car out from behind the garage he would inform my dad. The car had been retired as the back doors wouldn,t stay shut.Thoughs were the days now call dad from jail. I was woundering when you would pick up on the little hints. Your Dad still looks great (like A 60 year old in the picture(Happy Birthday to him and many more). Joe Canzi-- I use to go over to his house for coffee with him and his wife Anna and talk for quite a while. He could be grumpy but was good to me, great people. Now can you remember my last name.--also I'm the second youngest of them (5 boys 2 girls)does this help?

Yes I sure do remember, especially after talking to Ron Clark....The "Terry" did it the most as well as the 41 Plymouth. Email me at dcan@tbaytel.net and I will tell you more and give you my phone number to call. Too many personal thinks for the world to see. LOL, Dave
